The Sooty character was invented by Harry Corbett as a present for his son Matthew Corbett, in 1948. Sooty is a small yellow bear with black ears, which can’t talk out loud to the audience, but can be heard by those he whispers to.
Sooty has a whole host of other friends, the most famous of which being Sweep, a dog who can only communicate with a squeaky noise.
The character of Sooty is named as such due to the fact the original puppet was simply a yellow bear, which Harry Corbett added soot to, on the ears and nose, in order for it to show up more clearly on black and white television.
Sooty is a kind bear, but at times he can be cheeky or even naughty, when he pretends to misinterpret instructions given by the other characters, usually to comic effect. Sweep can act very similarly to Sooty at times, with the two of them in on a plan together, which Soo usually has to get them out of.
Overall, the Sooty and Sweep franchise is a greatly loved one in the UK and across many other countries of the world. Its longevity has been remarkable, having been on our TV screens for over half a century.
